Shimla Sanitation Strike Disrupts Waste Collection System

Shimla Sanitation Strike Affects City Cleanliness

Shimla (Kameshwar Sharma): A major Shimla Sanitation Strike has disrupted the city’s waste management system as SEHB employees under the Municipal Corporation launched an indefinite strike. The strike has started affecting garbage collection across several parts of the city.

As a result, concerns have increased about Shimla’s cleanliness ranking and its image as a major tourist destination.

Workers Protest Against Wage Issues

SEHB workers say they should receive a 10 percent salary hike as per rules. However, they claim that authorities have ignored their demands for a long time.

Moreover, employees stated that they repeatedly raised the issue with the administration, but no proper solution was provided. Therefore, they decided to begin an indefinite strike.

Union president Jaswant Singh said workers are fighting for their rights. He also demanded withdrawal of ESMA imposed by the district administration.

Union Rejects Government Pressure

Jaswant Singh said workers are ready to risk their jobs but will not withdraw the strike. In addition, he questioned the system where authorities charge citizens extra fees but do not give workers fair salary benefits.

He further alleged that the administration applies double standards against employees. Consequently, tensions between workers and administration have increased.

CITU Extends Support to Workers

The protest has also received support from CITU. State president Vijendra Mehra said discussions are ongoing with the administration regarding workers’ demands.

However, he claimed that despite talks, the administration has implemented a 10 percent salary deduction, which he called illegal.

Furthermore, he stated that no changes in service conditions can be made while negotiations are ongoing in the labour office.

Threat of Wider Statewide Protest

Vijendra Mehra warned that if authorities try to suppress the movement, the protest could expand significantly.

He said that strikes could also take place in IGMC and other sectors such as hotels, street vending, sewage treatment plants, and other CITU-supported unions.

Therefore, the situation may become more serious if no resolution is reached soon.

Waste Collection Disrupted Across City

Due to the strike, garbage collection has already been affected in several areas of Shimla. Many locations have reported uncollected waste, creating hygiene concerns.

Moreover, the timing of the strike during the cleanliness survey has become a major challenge for the Municipal Corporation.

Residents Concerned Over City Image

Local residents have expressed concern that if the strike continues, the city may face serious sanitation problems.

In addition, they fear that Shimla’s tourism image and cleanliness ranking could be negatively impacted.

Now, all attention is focused on the upcoming talks between the administration and workers, which may decide the future of the Shimla Sanitation Strike.
