A Punjabi man, Rajinder Singh, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in New Zealand for the murder of Gurjeet Singh. The incident took place on January 29, 2024, in Rajinder’s home, where he allegedly stabbed Gurjeet Singh 46 times in the neck.
The New Zealand court has ruled that Rajinder Singh will spend more than 17 years in prison without parole, reflecting the severity of the crime.
Court proceedings revealed that Rajinder Singh, a resident of Jalandhar, had proposed a marriage between his sister and Gurjeet Singh from Ludhiana. While the family had approved the proposal, Gurjeet married Rajinder’s junior instead, reportedly rejecting the match due to age considerations. Prior to the murder, Gurjeet Singh had been working as a cable technician under Rajinder Singh but later started working independently.
The shocking case highlights personal disputes escalating to extreme violence, raising concerns in both the Punjabi diaspora and New Zealand community about safety and legal accountability.
