Toronto: A disturbing hate-motivated incident has been reported in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, where a young individual allegedly assaulted an elderly Sikh man and used racist remarks, telling him, “Get out of my country.”
According to Woodstock Police, the incident occurred on April 22. Authorities have confirmed that the case is being investigated as a hate-motivated assault, and multiple charges have been filed against the accused youth.
Police stated that the elderly victim was walking on a sidewalk when the suspect approached and pushed him without any provocation. The attacker reportedly targeted the victim based on his race and made offensive and discriminatory comments. Fortunately, the victim did not suffer any physical injuries.
Investigations revealed that after the unprovoked attack, the youth entered a nearby school by climbing its fence and later fled the scene. Police confirmed that no students were harmed during the incident.
The accused has since been arrested and is being held in custody pending a bail hearing. Videos of the incident have also surfaced on social media, showing the youth repeatedly making racist statements such as, “What are you doing in my country? You don’t belong here. Get out of my country.”
Police emphasized that hate has no place in the community and urged the public to report any similar incidents. Authorities also assured that strict action will be taken against those involved in hate crimes.
Meanwhile, the World Sikh Organization expressed serious concern over the incident and strongly condemned the attack. The organization thanked police for their swift response and noted that recent reports of anti-Sikh incidents indicate a concerning rise in such cases.
It further stressed the importance of timely reporting, public awareness, and coordinated action from institutions to address hate-related crimes effectively.
