Shahkot: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann laid the foundation stone for the ambitious Shahkot Link Road Project on Friday. The state government has allocated Rs 61.82 crore for the project. The 37.93-kilometre road will connect Shahkot-Moga-Rampur Road with the Gidderpindi Dhussi embankment. Moreover, the project aims to strengthen flood protection infrastructure and improve connectivity in the Shahkot-Lohian region.
Project to Protect Flood-Prone Areas
Addressing a gathering, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said people living near the Sutlej River have faced flood threats for decades. However, previous governments failed to address the region’s infrastructure needs despite making several promises.
He said the government approved Rs 61.82 crore for the major infrastructure project. Furthermore, he added that the new road would strengthen the Dhussi embankment along the Sutlej River. As a result, the project will provide an additional shield against floods.
Improved Connectivity for Thousands of Residents
According to the Chief Minister, the Shahkot Link Road Project will benefit nearly 15 villages. Around 15,000 to 16,000 residents will gain easier access to transportation facilities.
In addition, the road will connect Shahkot-Moga Road with Lohian-Makhu Road. Therefore, it will act as an effective bypass and reduce traffic congestion on existing routes. During the monsoon season, farmers, school buses, and local residents will enjoy smooth transportation.
Government Focuses on Rural Infrastructure
Bhagwant Mann said his government remains committed to developing strong rural infrastructure across Punjab. He emphasized that the project represents more than just road construction.

Mann Highlights Guru Granth Sahib Sacrilege Amendment Act
During the event, the Chief Minister also spoke about the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Amendment Act, 2026. He expressed gratitude for getting the opportunity to introduce the legislation.
Bhagwant Mann said incidents of sacrilege deeply hurt the sentiments of millions of people. Therefore, the Punjab government prepared the bill after extensive consultations with legal experts.
He added that the legislation aims to act as a strong deterrent against anti-social elements. Moreover, the law seeks to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure strict punishment for those who commit such crimes.
