Senior advocate and former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Harvinder Singh Phoolka joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday in Chandigarh, marking a significant political development in Punjab politics.
Phoolka, who previously served as the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, had resigned from AAP in 2019. He is widely known for his long legal battle seeking justice for victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, earning recognition for his advocacy on human rights issues.
Reacting to Phoolka’s decision to join the BJP, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took a sarcastic swipe at the senior lawyer. Mann remarked that Phoolka had resigned after being elected by the people, questioning his political consistency.
Taking a dig at him, the Chief Minister said he had not seen such a person win elections again after stepping down in such a manner. However, Mann concluded his remarks by wishing Phoolka “good luck” for his new political journey.
Phoolka’s entry into the BJP is expected to influence political discussions in Punjab ahead of upcoming political developments, as leaders continue to shift alignments across parties.
