Chandigarh: Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has welcomed the recent amendment to make the blasphemy law stricter, while also demanding a fixed timeline for delivering justice in such cases.
Speaking on the issue, Warring said that there was no doubt that the amendments to the blasphemy law would be passed in the Punjab Assembly. He added that everyone supports strict punishment for those found guilty of sacrilege.
Questions on Government Intent
Warring questioned the effectiveness of repeated legal amendments, stating that if the intent of the ruling government is not genuine, then merely passing stricter laws does not serve justice.
He alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party government has failed in its intent, despite promising before the 2022 Assembly elections that perpetrators of sacrilege would be punished swiftly after coming to power.
Demand for Fixed Timeline
The Punjab Congress chief stressed that the government must set a clear timeline for justice delivery in sacrilege cases. He asked whether the government would specify by when justice would be delivered after the latest amendment.
Warring said that without a time-bound system, public trust in the government’s intentions would remain doubtful.
Political Criticism
He further stated that failure to define timelines would make the move appear as a political exercise rather than a genuine step toward justice.
