Punjab CM Health Scheme Emerges as Lifeline in Neurological Emergencies

Punjab CM Health Scheme Boosts Emergency Stroke Care

Chandigarh: The ‘Chief Minister Health Scheme’ launched by the Punjab government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is emerging as a major life-saving reform in the healthcare sector, particularly for neurological emergencies where every minute is critical.

So far, more than 4 million people have registered under the scheme. It provides cashless treatment of up to ₹10 lakh per family annually across both government and empanelled private hospitals. The coverage includes serious conditions such as Stroke, brain injuries, seizures, spinal cord injuries, and other neurological disorders.

The primary objective of the scheme is to ensure that no patient is denied treatment due to financial constraints, effectively making healthcare more accessible as a right.

A case from Hoshiarpur highlights the scheme’s impact. Sandeep Singh, who suffered an acute ischemic stroke, was immediately admitted to AIIMS Bathinda, where his treatment costing ₹32,300 was fully covered under the scheme. His family stated that having a pre-issued health card ensured there was no delay in treatment.

Medical experts have observed that the cashless model has significantly transformed emergency care. Hospitals are now able to begin treatment or surgery immediately, with paperwork being completed later, saving crucial time that was previously spent arranging funds.

Doctors emphasize the importance of the “golden hour” in stroke cases, where timely intervention greatly increases survival chances and reduces long-term disability.

Punjab is witnessing a rise in neurological cases due to factors such as hypertension, diabetes, aging, and road accidents. In this context, the scheme is playing a vital role in reducing mortality rates and long-term disabilities by ensuring timely medical intervention.

Doctors from Ludhiana and other cities have also noted increased awareness among patients. People are now more responsive to early symptoms such as facial drooping, speech difficulty, and sudden weakness, seeking immediate medical help without hesitation due to reduced financial fear.

Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh stated that the government’s aim is not only to provide treatment but also to ensure financial security for citizens. He emphasized that no one should lose their life or valuable time due to lack of money.
