Shimla (Kameshwar Sharma): Ex-Servicemen in Police Force Promotion received a major boost in Himachal Pradesh as Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu honored former soldiers serving in the state police force. During a ceremony held at Oak Over in Shimla, ex-servicemen expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for the government’s decision to grant higher ranks to eligible personnel.
Under the new policy, the state government has approved the promotion of 246 ex-servicemen as Head Constables and 115 ex-servicemen as Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs). As a result, a total of 361 former soldiers serving in Himachal Pradesh Police will benefit from the decision.
Government Recognizes Service of Former Soldiers
During the event, Chief Minister Sukhu participated in the piping ceremony of Head Constable Sudhir Sharma and Constable Ravi Dutt.
Moreover, he said that the government highly values the experience, discipline, and dedication that ex-servicemen bring to the police force. According to him, former soldiers continue serving society even after completing their military careers.
Furthermore, he noted that many ex-servicemen join the police force later in life. Therefore, they often do not get enough time to complete the required service period needed for honorary promotions.
Eligibility Rules Relaxed for Ex-Servicemen
The Chief Minister explained that existing rules require police personnel to complete 20 years of service to qualify for honorary Head Constable status and 32 years for honorary ASI status.
However, ex-servicemen generally enter the police department after serving in the armed forces. Consequently, they struggle to meet these lengthy service requirements.
Therefore, the government decided to provide necessary relaxation in eligibility criteria. This step will allow deserving ex-servicemen to receive honorary promotions and recognition for their contribution.
Respect for Service to Nation and State
Sukhu emphasized that former soldiers first protected the nation’s borders and now help maintain law and order within the state.
In addition, he said that granting them one-rank-higher appointments will enhance their dignity and acknowledge their years of dedicated service.
As a result, the decision reflects the government’s commitment to honoring those who have served both the country and the state.
Employment Opportunities for Agniveers
The Chief Minister also addressed the impact of the Agniveer recruitment scheme. He said that interest among some young people toward military service has declined after the scheme’s implementation.
Nevertheless, the state government continues to explore maximum employment opportunities for Agniveers. Furthermore, it aims to ensure that trained youth receive meaningful career options after completing their service.
Focus on Police Modernization
Sukhu stated that the government is actively strengthening and modernizing the police force.
Moreover, the state has extended legal protection under Section 218 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to police personnel working in difficult and challenging conditions. Previously, only senior officers received this protection.
Additionally, the government is rationalizing the number of senior positions and reducing vacancies in IAS, IPS, and IFS cadres to improve administrative efficiency.
Strong Action Against Drug Trafficking
The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking.
Meanwhile, Ex-Servicemen in Police Force departments across the state continue to play a crucial role in the campaign against “Chitta” and other narcotics. The government is taking strict action against drug smugglers and any employees found involved in drug-related activities.
