Following recent heavy snowfall in the tribal district of Lahaul Valley, the situation has turned concerning as weather conditions begin to clear. Incidents of glacier falls have been reported from the high mountains surrounding the North Portal of Atal Tunnel Rohtang, significantly increasing risk levels in the region.
Authorities have warned that sudden glacier slides may disrupt roads and transportation while posing serious threats to tourists and local residents. The falling ice masses can lead to unexpected road blockages and hazardous travel conditions.
Taking note of the situation’s seriousness, Lahaul-Spiti Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana has urged tourists and residents to remain alert and strictly follow safety advisories. She specifically cautioned people against visiting riverbanks and streams, as glacier movement and sudden water flow increases are highly likely after heavy snowfall.
According to the administration, accumulated snow on mountain slopes has started loosening due to changing weather conditions, resulting in a higher frequency of glacier falls. Even minor negligence in such conditions could lead to major accidents.
The district administration has appealed to everyone to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas and comply with official guidelines to ensure public safety.
