Shimla Mock Drill to Test Cloudburst and Earthquake Plans

Shimla (Kameshwar Sharma): The Shimla Mock Drill will test the district’s preparedness for natural disasters as authorities conduct the 10th Mega Mock Exercise on June 15, 2026. The large-scale exercise will simulate cloudburst, earthquake and forest fire emergencies to evaluate the effectiveness of disaster management plans and emergency response systems.

Deputy Commissioner Shimla and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, Anupam Kashyap, chaired a district-level review meeting to assess preparations and ensure smooth coordination among all departments involved in the exercise.

Disaster Preparedness Under Focus

The primary objective of the Shimla Mock Drill is to review disaster management strategies and assess emergency response mechanisms. Additionally, the exercise will help authorities evaluate standard operating procedures and identify areas that require improvement.

Furthermore, the drill aims to strengthen coordination among government departments, rescue agencies and emergency response teams during crisis situations.

Exercise to Be Conducted in Two Sessions

Officials will organize the Shimla Mock Drill Exercise in two phases. The first session will run from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM, while the second session will take place from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM.

Moreover, authorities have designed multiple disaster scenarios to test the readiness of response teams across different regions of the district.

Cloudburst and Forest Fire Emergencies to Be Simulated

The administration will conduct cloudburst simulations in Rampur and Sunni. These exercises will assess rescue operations, evacuation procedures and communication systems during flood-like emergencies.

Meanwhile, officials will carry out a forest fire response exercise at Tara Devi. The drill will focus on rapid firefighting measures, emergency coordination and public safety management.

Earthquake Mock Drills Across District

In addition, earthquake simulations will take place at several educational institutions and public locations, including Rohru, Theog, Kotkhai, Jubbal, Kumarsain, Dodra, Kupvi and Bhattakufar.

These Shimla Mock Drill will help authorities evaluate evacuation procedures, emergency communication networks and disaster response capabilities. As a result, departments will gain valuable experience in handling real-life emergency situations.

Administration Aims for Better Coordination

Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap stated that the exercise seeks to improve coordination among all departments involved in disaster management. He emphasized that officials must identify shortcomings and take corrective measures to enhance preparedness levels.

Furthermore, he directed concerned departments to submit detailed reports after the exercise so that authorities can analyze performance and improve future response strategies.

Officials Review Preparations

Several senior officials attended the review meeting, including Additional District Magistrate (Protocol) Jyoti Rana, Additional Commissioner of Shimla Municipal Corporation Dr. Bhuvan Sharma and Additional Superintendent of Police Amit Thakur.

The administration expects the Shimla Mock Drill to strengthen disaster preparedness and ensure a faster, more effective response during natural disasters. Ultimately, the exercise will help safeguard lives and property by improving emergency management capabilities across the district.
