Awareness Rally Held on 121st Anniversary of Kangra Earthquake

Kangra Marks 121 Years of 1905 Earthquake With Rally

A public awareness rally was organized on Saturday to mark the 121st anniversary of the devastating 1905 Kangra earthquake, one of the most destructive earthquakes in India’s history.

The rally was conducted from CTO Chowk to Sher-e-Punjab and was flagged off by Jyoti Rana, Additional District Magistrate (Protocol), who led participants in spreading awareness about disaster preparedness and safety measures.

Speaking on the occasion, Jyoti Rana said the earthquake that struck Kangra on April 4, 1905, caused massive destruction at a time when organized disaster management systems and public awareness were limited. She emphasized that today’s disaster response framework has significantly improved with modern resources and structured mechanisms available from district to sub-division levels.

She highlighted that District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMA) are now equipped to carry out immediate rescue and relief operations during emergencies, ensuring faster response and better coordination.

The ADM also spoke about the government’s Disaster Mitra Scheme, under which local youth are trained to assist authorities during natural disasters. These trained volunteers act as first responders, helping with rescue operations and community support during emergencies.

Through the rally, officials encouraged citizens to remain alert and prepared, stressing that awareness and preparedness are the most effective ways to minimize loss of life and property during disasters.
