Shimla (Kameshwar Sharma): The Shimla Summer Traffic Management plan delivered impressive results during the peak summer tourism season. Despite a record influx of tourists, Shimla Police maintained smooth traffic flow through effective planning, increased manpower, and better coordination.
Between May and June 2026, more than 18.5 lakh vehicles entered Shimla through different entry points. Around 8.5 lakh vehicles arrived in May, while nearly 10 lakh vehicles entered the city in June. Despite the city’s limited road capacity, the police successfully managed the heavy traffic.
Police Double Traffic Deployment
To tackle the rising traffic volume, Shimla Police increased the deployment of police and Home Guard personnel from 136 to 265.
Additionally, the department deployed nearly 50 civil volunteers and 32 traffic bike riders. These teams responded quickly whenever congestion developed.
Furthermore, officials used three recovery cranes to remove broken-down or improperly parked vehicles. As a result, they restored normal traffic movement without major delays.
Five-Sector Strategy Improves Traffic Control
This year, Shimla Police adopted a decentralized traffic management strategy.
For this purpose, officials divided the city into five sectors. They assigned one Grade-I officer to supervise each sector.
Moreover, these officers personally monitored traffic instead of relying only on field reports. Senior police officers also conducted regular inspections and resolved traffic issues on the spot whenever necessary.
Alternate Routes Reduce Congestion
Shimla Police encouraged tourists travelling to Kufri, Mashobra, Naldehra, Upper Shimla, and Kinnaur to use the Shoghi–Mehli Bypass.
Consequently, around 600 to 800 vehicles used the alternate route every day. This strategy significantly reduced traffic pressure on the city’s main roads.
Real-Time Traffic Updates Help Visitors
The police also improved parking management throughout the tourism season.
In addition, they shared real-time traffic updates through social media platforms. Officials promoted public transport and deployed interceptor vehicles to enforce traffic rules strictly.
As a result, visitors experienced smoother travel despite the large number of vehicles entering the city.
Police Honour Outstanding Personnel and Volunteers
Shimla Police recognized officers, staff members, and civil volunteers who made significant contributions to traffic management.
On June 27, 2026, the Superintendent of Police organized a special briefing for traffic personnel. During the event, he appreciated their discipline, dedication, and professional service under challenging conditions.
He emphasized that traffic management is not limited to enforcing rules. Instead, it also ensures the safety, convenience, and smooth movement of residents and tourists.
Finally, the department honoured 10 civil volunteers with certificates of appreciation for their valuable contribution during the summer tourist season.

Furthermore, officials appealed to commuters to continue following traffic rules and use alternate routes whenever required.
