Reckong Peo (Kameshwar Sharma): The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra 2026 has been suspended until further orders. The Kinnaur district administration took this decision after identifying serious safety risks along the pilgrimage route.
Moreover, officials urged devotees from India and abroad to postpone their travel plans. They also advised pilgrims to follow all government instructions until conditions improve.
The administration said it took the decision to protect pilgrims, rescue teams, and disaster response personnel. At present, unstable glaciers, loose boulders, and the risk of landslides have made the route unsafe.
Administration Acts After Reconnaissance Report
Earlier, Revenue and Tribal Development Minister Jagat Singh Negi chaired a meeting. During the meeting, officials approved the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra 2026 from July 1 to July 30.
However, the Forest Department and the district administration sent a special reconnaissance team on June 21 to inspect the route.
The team found several dangerous locations. Therefore, the administration immediately suspended the pilgrimage to protect human life.
Glaciers and Unstable Boulders Block the Route
According to the report, the route from Milling Khata to Shivling remains highly dangerous. Several glaciers cover the route. Massive rocks and unstable boulders also threaten pilgrims.
In addition, heavy boulders have blocked the route between the holy cave and Sorang.
Officials found many rocks resting in unstable positions. They warned that these rocks could fall at any time.
Meanwhile, rising temperatures continue to melt snow rapidly. As a result, the rocks have become even more unstable. The risk of landslides and sudden debris flow has also increased significantly.
Administration Gives Top Priority to Safety
The district administration said the safety of pilgrims remains its highest priority.
Officials will review the situation after the weather improves. They will make a fresh decision only when experts declare the route completely safe.
Therefore, the administration requested all devotees to avoid travelling to the area until further orders.
Night Travel Completely Banned
The administration has completely banned night travel between Milling Khata and the holy cave.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Kinnaur Kailash Yatra Organising Committee Chairman Praveen Kumar Bhardwaj appealed to devotees to postpone their pilgrimage. He asked them to wait until the administration restores the route and declares it safe.
Furthermore, officials advised pilgrims to rely only on official government updates before planning their journey.

District officials continue to monitor the weather and the condition of the pilgrimage route.
Finally, the administration will review the situation regularly. It will announce a new schedule for the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra 2026 only after experts confirm that the route is completely safe.
