New Delhi: The proposed OTT release of the controversial gangster-based web series “Lawrence of Punjab” has been blocked on the ZEE5 platform following a major intervention by the Central Government.
Acting on a request from the Punjab Police, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued strict directions to OTT platform ZEE5, instructing it not to stream the series. The decision has effectively halted the release of the show on the platform.
The Punjab Police had earlier written to the Centre seeking a ban on the web series, citing concerns related to law and order and wider public interest. The letter was sent by the state’s cyber crime wing, highlighting the sensitive nature of the content.
According to officials, the series reportedly portrays the life of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, including references to major criminal incidents such as the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala. It also allegedly depicts his journey from a student leader to becoming involved in organized crime.
Meanwhile, in related legal proceedings, the High Court disposed of a petition filed by Punjab Congress leader Raja Warring after taking note of the Centre’s decision. With the government’s stand now officially recorded, the matter has been closed.
The development has ended all uncertainty regarding the release of the series, which had already sparked debate over its content and potential social impact.
