Punjab Cities Transform Under AMRUT Scheme, Major Urban Projects Progress

Punjab Cities Transform Under AMRUT Urban Scheme

New Delhi: Punjab’s urban landscape is gradually undergoing a visible transformation under the Centre’s AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme, which focuses on improving water supply, sewerage systems, and urban greenery.

Over the past five years, the scheme has made a significant ground-level impact across several cities in the state. According to official data, a total of 214 projects have been undertaken in Punjab under AMRUT, with an estimated investment of around ₹3,626 crore. More than 80% of the work has already been completed.

A major focus of the initiative has been strengthening drinking water supply systems and modernizing sewerage infrastructure. Under AMRUT 2.0, the government has set a target of providing tap water connections to every household. Nearly 60–65% of the total budget has been allocated specifically to water supply projects.

Key city-level projects include a ₹16 crore water supply project in Malout, benefiting nearly 1 lakh residents, and an ongoing ₹61 crore water supply scheme in Samana. In several towns, residents now receive regular water supply, reducing dependence on tanker services.

Significant improvements have also been seen in sewerage networks. The expansion of pipelines and establishment of treatment plants have reduced waterlogging issues, contributing to better hygiene and public health conditions in urban areas.

The AMRUT scheme has also emphasized increasing green spaces. New parks have been developed while existing ones have been upgraded, turning them into important community spaces for recreation and social interaction.

So far, projects worth ₹2,980 crore have been completed in Punjab, and an additional ₹665 crore budget has recently been approved. However, challenges remain, including timely completion of pending projects and strengthening local municipal capacities.

While AMRUT has laid a strong foundation for urban transformation in Punjab across water, sanitation, and greenery sectors, its full success will be measured only when its benefits reach every city and household effectively.
