Punjab Introduces Finland-Based Learning Model in Schools Under Education Reform

Punjab Adopts Finland Model to Transform Schools

Finland: Punjab’s school education system is witnessing a major transformation as the state government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has introduced a new Finland-inspired learning model in collaboration with the University of Turku, Finland.

The initiative marks a shift from traditional rote learning to a more interactive, activity-based, and student-centred education system. Under this approach, classrooms are being redesigned to make learning more engaging and experience-based rather than textbook-focused.

The programme is part of Punjab’s broader “education revolution” aimed at adopting global best practices in local classrooms. The key objective is to make learning enjoyable for students and reduce academic pressure by encouraging participation and creativity.

As part of the collaboration, a “Train-the-Trainers” model has been introduced. Around 300 teachers are expected to be trained by May 2026, who will further mentor other educators across the state. This cascading training system is designed to ensure long-term structural improvements in teaching practices.

During his visit to Finland, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann toured the Kukuloo-Moikoeninen Early Childhood Education and Care Centre and highlighted the positive impact of the partnership. He stated that integrating global educational practices into Punjab’s classrooms is already showing encouraging results.

The initiative has been implemented through the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), with a focus on strengthening the role of teachers and reshaping foundational education.

Workshops, school visits, and mentoring sessions conducted in Chandigarh, Turku, and Rauma have provided teachers with hands-on exposure to innovative teaching methods.

Officials emphasized that teachers are being encouraged to design lessons based on student needs and adopt new classroom techniques. This is leading to higher student engagement, improved participation, and a more positive learning environment across government schools in Punjab.
