Iran-US Peace Talks Collapse in Islamabad, Tensions Escalate Globally

Iran US Talks Fail in Islamabad Amid Rising Tensions

Islamabad: Peace talks between the United States and Iran ended without any agreement in Islamabad, while diplomatic tensions between the two nations have sharply escalated.

Following the breakdown of negotiations, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian blamed the United States, accusing it of “double standards” and a “dictatorial approach” that prevented a fair and balanced agreement. He stated that Iran remains committed to a “balanced and just deal” aimed at ensuring long-term regional peace and security, but only if international laws are respected.

Putin’s Support for Iran

During a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Pezeshkian discussed the failed talks and the rising regional tensions. Putin reportedly criticized Western double standards and expressed support for Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also backed Iran’s concerns regarding recent attacks and security guarantees.

US Position and Escalation Claims

Meanwhile, reports suggest that former US President Donald Trump has ordered measures related to the Strait of Hormuz, including restrictions that are expected to begin at 7:30 PM IST. The move has further intensified global geopolitical uncertainty.

Key Disputes in Talks

The Islamabad meeting was described as the most high-level direct engagement between the two countries in decades. However, major disagreements persisted over control of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s uranium enrichment (nuclear program).

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of changing its position during negotiations and attempting to apply pressure tactics. He said Iran entered talks in good faith but faced shifting demands from Washington.

Rising Global Impact

Despite the failure of negotiations, the situation has not immediately escalated into open conflict. A two-week ceasefire remains in place, while international actors continue to push for diplomatic engagement.

The ongoing crisis, which began in late February, has reportedly claimed over 3,300 lives and significantly disrupted maritime activity in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route. Iran’s restrictions on shipping have further increased pressure on global oil supply chains.
