Shimla (Kameshwar Sharma): The Himachal GI Tag Products list has expanded significantly after eight traditional products from Himachal Pradesh received Geographical Indication (GI) registration. The achievement marks another milestone in preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage, traditional craftsmanship, and agricultural excellence while creating new economic opportunities for artisans and farmers.
With the addition of these Himachal GI Tag Products, the total number of GI-registered products from the state has increased to 17. The registrations were secured through the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology and Environment (HIMCOST).
Eight Traditional Products Receive GI Tag
The newly registered Himachal GI Tag Products include Spiti Sea Buckthorn (Charma), Salooni White Maize, Chamba Metal Art, Sirmouri Loiya, Kinnauri Cap, Mandi Sepu Badi, Kinnauri Apple, and Kinnauri Jewellery.
These products represent the unique traditions, craftsmanship, agriculture, and cultural identity of different regions of Himachal Pradesh. Moreover, the GI registration protects their originality and geographical identity.
As a result, producers will be able to market their products with greater authenticity and recognition.
Chief Minister Congratulates People of Himachal
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu congratulated the people of the state on the recognition of the Himachal GI Tag Products. He said the achievement reflects the government’s continuous efforts over the past three and a half years to preserve and promote Himachal Pradesh’s traditional heritage.
Furthermore, he stated that GI registration will increase the market value of these products while protecting them from imitation.
According to the Chief Minister, stronger branding will generate employment opportunities, encourage rural entrepreneurship, and strengthen the state’s economy.
GI Tag to Benefit Farmers and Artisans
The Himachal GI Tag Products are expected to provide long-term benefits to tribal communities, artisans, weavers, farmers, and traditional producers.
Additionally, the GI certification will support value addition, improve product recognition, and create better marketing opportunities.
Consequently, local producers may receive better prices for their products in domestic as well as international markets.
The Chief Minister also said that the recognition would preserve Himachal Pradesh’s cultural heritage while opening new avenues for sustainable economic growth.
Government Working on Four More GI Tags
The state government is actively pursuing GI registration for four additional traditional products. These include Bhot Barley from Pangi in Chamba district, Chamba Chukh, Plectranthus Honey from Bharmaur, and Sirmaur Ginger.
Moreover, the Chief Minister directed officials to speed up the registration process so these products can also receive GI recognition.
If approved, these additions will further strengthen the portfolio of Himachal GI Tag Products.
GI Registration Strengthens Brand Identity
Environment, Science, Technology and Climate Change Department Secretary Sushil Kumar Singla said GI registration protects products from counterfeit and unauthorized use.
Furthermore, he explained that the certification strengthens brand identity, improves market acceptance, and increases export opportunities.
He added that the GI tag helps consumers identify authentic products while ensuring that the benefits reach genuine local producers.
Himachal Now Has 17 GI-Registered Products
Before this latest recognition, nine products from Himachal Pradesh had already received GI registration. These include Kullu Shawl, Kangra Tea, Chamba Rumal, Kinnauri Shawl, Kangra Painting, Himachali Black Cumin, Himachali Apricot Oil (Chulli Oil), Chamba Chappal, and Lahauli Woven Socks and Gloves.
With the addition of eight more Himachal GI Tag Products, the state’s total GI-registered products now stand at 17. This achievement further strengthens Himachal Pradesh’s identity as a hub of traditional crafts, indigenous agriculture, and cultural excellence.
