Accusing the Himachal Pradesh government of imposing a so-called “Gunda Tax,” the Independent Taxi Union staged a protest today against the recent hike in taxes affecting taxi operators across the state.
Union president Jasbir Singh Boparai stated that taxi drivers are already facing severe financial hardships and the sudden increase in taxes has further worsened their situation. He said the transport sector has been struggling continuously since the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by rising inflation and fuel shortages triggered by global conflicts, which have significantly impacted business operations.
According to the union, the tourism industry — a major source of income for taxi drivers in Himachal Pradesh — has nearly come to a halt, leaving operators with limited earnings. In such circumstances, the government’s decision to sharply increase taxes has created serious challenges for drivers.
Boparai explained that the tax for small vehicles was earlier Rs 30, later increased to Rs 70, and has now been abruptly raised to Rs 170. He alleged that drivers are already paying multiple taxes to both state and central governments, and the latest hike has added an unbearable financial burden.
Demanding a refund and rollback of the increased tax, the union warned that if their demands are not addressed, large-scale protests will begin at the borders adjoining Himachal Pradesh starting April 10.
The union leaders urged the government to reconsider the decision and hold discussions with stakeholders to resolve the issue before the agitation escalates.
