Mohali: Former Punjab Health Minister and senior Congress leader Balbir Singh Sidhu strongly criticized the Punjab government’s decision to provide a monthly Punjab’s Sarpanch Honorarium of ₹10,000 only to Sarpanches while excluding Panchs, Block Samiti members, and Zila Parishad members.
Sidhu argued that every elected representative plays an equally important role in rural development. Therefore, the government should treat all grassroots representatives fairly instead of favoring only one category.
Sidhu Questions Government’s Decision
Firstly, Sidhu questioned why the Punjab government announced a monthly honorarium only for Sarpanches.
According to him, Panchs, Block Samiti members, and Zila Parishad members also solve public issues and contribute significantly to village development. Therefore, excluding them from the scheme is unfair.

Additionally, Sidhu requested monthly honorariums for Cooperative Bank directors.
He suggested that the government provide them with ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 every month because they also shoulder important public responsibilities and contribute to the cooperative sector.
