Amritsar (Rajesh Sandhu): Following the directions of the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) installed awareness boards outside various gurdwaras to inform the Sikh Sangat about objections and concerns related to the Punjab government’s “Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act 2026.” and SGPC Raises Big Objections Over Guru Granth Sahib Act.
SGPC Highlights Major Concerns in the New Act
The information boards explain several controversial points in the Act. According to SGPC, the law uses the term “custodian” in a way that could hold granthis, akhand pathi Singhs, gurdwara committees, and devotees legally responsible in cases related to beadbi or maryada violations.
Moreover, SGPC expressed concern that the Act could create fear among Sikh devotees by treating maryada violations as legal offenses.
SGPC Raises Concern Over Police Interference
SGPC also claimed that the Act could open the door for direct police interference inside gurdwaras. In addition, the committee objected to changes in Panthic terminology and the failure to define Sikh religious terms and institutions according to Sikh sentiments and traditions.
Sikh Scholars Express Serious Objections
SGPC Chief Secretary S. Kulwant Singh Mannan said the issue is deeply connected to Sikh religious sentiments. He stated that Sikh scholars and intellectuals have raised serious objections to the law passed by the Punjab government.
Therefore, SGPC decided to educate the Sangat through awareness boards installed outside gurdwaras.
Appeal for Panthic Unity
Kulwant Singh Mannan further stated that incidents related to disrespect of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji remain extremely sensitive for the Sikh community. He emphasized that any law related to this matter must align with Gurmat principles, Panthic sentiments, and the guidance of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
Finally, he appealed to the Sikh Sangat to stay aware and unite under the leadership of Sri Akal Takht Sahib to protect Panthic unity and Sikh principles.
