Rain, Hailstorm and Thunderstorm Alert Issued for Punjab & Chandigarh Amid Changing Weather

Rain and Thunderstorm Alert for Punjab, Chandigarh

Weather conditions have changed significantly across Punjab and Chandigarh, bringing rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms to several regions. Rain has been reported in parts of Mohali, Pathankot, and Bathinda, while Amritsar and nearby areas witnessed rainfall accompanied by hail.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for the Tricity region — Chandigarh, SAS Nagar (Mohali), and Panchkula — predicting light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning activity after 2:15 PM. Cloudy skies and cool winds are expected to prevail throughout the day.

According to the weather department, two consecutive western disturbances are likely to impact North India this week. Rainfall, strong winds, and hailstorms are expected across Punjab on Friday and Saturday, with wind speeds likely to reach 50–60 km per hour. Chandigarh has been placed under an orange alert due to the changing weather conditions.

Light rainfall is also expected in the Tricity and adjoining areas over the next two to three hours. Meteorologists stated that an active western disturbance over eastern Iran and adjoining Afghanistan, along with an upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Pakistan and Kutch, is influencing weather patterns in the region.

A fresh western disturbance is expected to affect northwest India from April 7, 2026. According to Meteorological Department Director Surender Pal, light to moderate rainfall is likely at isolated places across the state on April 3, 4, 7, and 8, while scattered showers may occur on April 5 and 6.

Maximum temperatures are expected to remain stable over the next 24 hours; however, a drop of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius is likely over the next three days.

It is noteworthy that rainfall between March 30 and 31 caused significant crop damage across the Malwa region. Reports of flattened crops were received from districts including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Barnala, Tarn Taran, Fazilka, Mansa, Sangrur, Hoshiarpur, and Gurdaspur following strong winds, hailstorms, and heavy rain.

Weather forecasts indicate another spell of western disturbances between April 3–4, followed by a second phase expected between April 7–9, which may further impact weather conditions in the region.
