Chandigarh: The Punjab Voter Verification Drive 2026 will begin across the state on June 25 as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Anindita Mitra announced that all preparations for the large-scale exercise have been completed.
Under the Punjab Voter Verification Drive 2026, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit households across the state. They will distribute pre-printed forms, assist residents in filling them out, and later collect the completed forms. The door-to-door enumeration campaign will continue until July 24, 2026.
More Than 2.14 Crore Voters to Be Covered
According to officials, the Punjab Voter Verification Drive 2026 will cover more than 2.14 crore voters across Punjab. A total of 24,453 BLOs have been assigned to conduct the verification process.
Meanwhile, voter mapping has already achieved significant progress. So far, officials have mapped 1.84 crore voters, which accounts for 86.02 percent of the state’s total electorate.
Furthermore, election authorities have introduced measures to ensure maximum coverage. If a household does not submit the required form, the concerned BLO will make up to three visits. In addition, the officer will place a sticker on the door after each visit to record the attempt.

No Eligible Voter Will Lose Voting Rights
During an interaction with journalists, Anindita Mitra assured residents that the Punjab Voter Verification Drive 2026 will protect the rights of all eligible voters.
If officials fail to map a voter during the initial phase, authorities will issue a notice during the claims and objections period. Subsequently, the concerned individual can submit the necessary documents and request inclusion in the electoral roll.
Moreover, Mitra emphasized that election officials will not remove any eligible voter from the list without following due process. She reiterated that every qualified citizen will receive a fair opportunity to establish eligibility.
Foreign Passport Holders Not Eligible to Vote in India
The Chief Electoral Officer also clarified rules regarding citizenship and voting rights. According to election laws, individuals who have acquired the passport of another country are not eligible to register as voters in India.
Additionally, voters cannot maintain registration at two different locations. Authorities warned that anyone who remains registered after obtaining foreign citizenship or holds multiple voter registrations may face legal action.
In such cases, the law provides for penalties, including imprisonment of up to one year.
Political Parties Kept Informed
To ensure transparency, officials have conducted meetings with political parties at multiple levels. These discussions took place at the state, district, tehsil, and BLO levels.
Furthermore, election authorities incorporated several suggestions received from political stakeholders. According to Mitra, officials have worked closely with parties to ensure smooth implementation of the Punjab Voter Verification Drive 2026.
At the same time, Electoral Registration Officers have received instructions to stay in regular contact with BLOs through video conferencing. This approach will help authorities collect feedback quickly and resolve technical or field-level issues without delay.
Consequently, election officials expect the voter verification campaign to proceed efficiently and ensure an accurate, updated, and inclusive electoral roll for Punjab ahead of future elections.
