Sri Amritsar Sahib (Dawarka Nath Rana): The Punjab Legal Services Authority Jail Inspection took place during an official visit by Mrs. Jagdeep Kaur Virk, Member Secretary (In-Charge), Punjab State Legal Services Authority, SAS Nagar.
The visit aimed to review the functioning of the District Legal Services Authority, Amritsar. The inspection team also reviewed the legal aid services and free legal assistance provided to inmates in the jail.
Detailed Review of Legal Aid Records and Systems
During the inspection, officials examined records related to legal aid services, jail visits, and the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System.
The purpose of the Punjab Legal Services Authority Jail Inspection was to ensure the proper implementation of legal aid schemes and protect the legal rights of prisoners.
Officials checked whether inmates were receiving timely legal representation and support inside the prison.
Punjab Legal Services Authority: Women Barracks and Female Prisoners’ Issues Reviewed
Mrs. Jagdeep Kaur Virk also inspected the women barracks in detail. She interacted directly with female prisoners and listened carefully to their complaints and concerns.
She held private meetings with women inmates so they could freely discuss issues related to legal representation, welfare, and facilities available inside the jail.
The inspection focused on ensuring that female prisoners receive proper support and legal assistance.
Welfare of Children Living in Jail Examined
During the women barracks inspection, officials also interacted with children living in jail with their mothers.
The team reviewed their living conditions, healthcare, and overall well-being. Officials found that seven children currently live inside the jail premises with their mothers.

Food Quality and Vocational Training Appreciated
Officials also checked the quality of food prepared for inmates and found the arrangements satisfactory during the inspection.
The Member Secretary visited the vocational training center operating in the women’s ward. She appreciated the items prepared by inmates and encouraged skill-based training programs.
Officials emphasized the importance of vocational and employment-oriented training for prisoner rehabilitation and empowerment.
Male Prisoners Also Interacted With Officials
After reviewing the women’s ward, officials also interacted with male inmates.
Private meetings were held with male prisoners to assess the effectiveness of the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System. Officials ensured that prisoners were receiving proper legal support and representation on time.

Amardeep Singh Bains, PCS, Civil Judge (Senior Division)-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Amritsar, and Rajiv Kumar Arora, Jail Superintendent, were also present during the visit.
Both officials cooperated in conducting the inspection smoothly and efficiently.
