In a major step to curb organized crime and gangster networks, the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has initiated the implementation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based policing system in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar.
The primary objective of this initiative is to create a comprehensive and structured database of gangsters and criminals. This system is expected to strengthen ongoing campaigns like anti-gangster drives and anti-drug operations by enabling more targeted and efficient action against criminal networks operating both within and outside the state.
Under this project, advanced AI tools will be developed to identify, map, and monitor criminal networks. These tools will provide real-time intelligence to the Punjab Police, significantly enhancing their ability to respond swiftly and effectively.
To operationalize the project, a formal collaboration agreement has been established involving institutions such as the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences and IIT Ropar. A Data Intelligence and Technical Support Unit set up in Mohali will play a central role in coordinating efforts across departments and ensuring smooth implementation.
The system will incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as data analytics, voice recognition, and dashboard-based monitoring. These features will streamline crime investigation processes and improve surveillance efficiency.
Importantly, the platform will also help track international gangster networks operating from abroad. In addition, old records, including handwritten documents and scanned files, will be digitized and integrated into a unified database using AI, thereby accelerating investigative procedures.
This move marks a significant technological advancement in law enforcement, aiming to make Punjab safer through data-driven and proactive policing.
