Amritsar: The Agriculture Department of Punjab has intensified its crackdown on the misuse of subsidised urea in industrial units, conducting inspections in Amritsar district.
A team led by Joint Director Agriculture (Engineering) Punjab, Jagdish Singh, along with Agriculture Officer Dr. Bakshish Singh and ADO Ketan, carried out a detailed inspection of dyeing and plywood industries in the district.
Officials stated that the consumption of urea fertilizer has been continuously increasing in Punjab, and investigations have revealed possible illegal diversion of subsidised urea to industrial units, which is strictly prohibited.
The department confirmed that statewide inspections are being conducted to curb this malpractice, and the Amritsar visit was part of the ongoing enforcement drive.
Chief Agriculture Officer Amritsar, Gursahib Singh, instructed all fertilizer dealers to clear sales records in POS machines and ensure that fertilizers are supplied strictly as per crop requirements. He warned that any dealer found selling urea to industries would face strict legal action.
During the visit, Joint Director Jagdish Singh also held a meeting with block-level agriculture officers and issued strict directions to continue regular monitoring of fertilizer dealers, feed units, and plywood industries.
He further instructed that if any industry is found using subsidised urea, immediate action should be taken under the Essential Commodities Act 1955 and Fertilizer Control Order 1985.
The department emphasized that strict monitoring will continue to ensure fair distribution of fertilizers to farmers and prevent misuse in non-agricultural sectors.
