New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday addressed the Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan at Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital, emphasizing the growing role of women in India’s development journey.

The Prime Minister said that amid several milestones in India’s growth story, the country is preparing to take one of the most significant decisions of the 21st century, dedicated to women empowerment.

He described the initiative as a historic step aimed at strengthening women’s participation in leadership and mainstream development.

Focus on Women Empowerment

PM Modi highlighted several government initiatives that have transformed women’s financial inclusion and opportunities. He noted that before 2014, millions of women had never accessed banking services. However, under the Jan Dhan Yojana, more than 320 million women opened bank accounts, bringing them into the formal financial system.

He further said that under the Mudra Yojana, more than 60% of loans have been availed by women, reflecting their growing participation in entrepreneurship and business activities.

The Prime Minister also stated that women are leading India’s startup revolution, with over 42% of registered startups having at least one woman director.

Role of Women in Leadership

PM Modi emphasized that women in India now hold key positions ranging from the President to the Finance Minister, contributing significantly to the nation’s pride and progress.

Nari Shakti Vandan Act

Referring to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, passed in 2023, the Prime Minister said that it was unanimously supported and represents a long-standing demand for women’s reservation in legislative bodies. He noted that its implementation is expected to take place by 2029.

He also highlighted that discussions on women’s reservation in democratic institutions have continued for nearly four decades, with successive governments contributing to the idea in different ways.

Historic Parliamentary Step

PM Modi mentioned that April 16–18 marks a historic phase, as Parliament moves closer to implementing the women’s reservation framework. He said the special session reflects a new era of democratic inclusion and equality.

He added that India’s Parliament is on the verge of creating history by turning long-standing aspirations into reality, ensuring greater participation of women in decision-making processes.

Closing Remarks

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the festive spirit of Baisakhi and extended tributes to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, marking a moment of remembrance and national pride.
