Dr. Archita Mahajan, a nutrition dietitian and child care specialist with a Master’s degree in Food Nutrition and Dietetics, homeopathic pharmacist, and trained yoga teacher, has explained the common reasons behind night-time itching experienced by diabetes patients. She has been nominated for the Padma Bhushan National Award and honored by the Punjab Government, Himachal Pradesh Government, and Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta.
According to Dr. Mahajan, diabetic patients often experience itching at night due to dry skin, poor blood circulation, and diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage). High blood sugar levels draw moisture from body tissues, reduce blood flow, and damage nerves, leading to irritation and itching sensations that become more noticeable when the body relaxes at night.
Major Causes of Night Itching in Diabetes Patients
1. Dry Skin (Xerosis)
High blood sugar removes moisture from the body, making the skin dry and irritated. Dryness is one of the leading causes of itching among diabetic patients.
2. Poor Blood Circulation
Diabetes affects blood vessels, reducing circulation especially in the hands and feet. Reduced blood flow causes dryness and itching, particularly in the lower limbs.
3. Diabetic Neuropathy (Nerve Damage)
Long-term high blood sugar damages nerves, sending abnormal signals to the brain that may be felt as itching, tingling, or burning sensations, especially in the feet.
4. Fungal Infections
People with diabetes are more prone to fungal infections such as Candida and athlete’s foot. These infections cause redness and itching, particularly in moist areas of the body.
5. Blood Sugar Fluctuations
Very high or very low blood sugar levels at night can disturb sleep and increase discomfort, including itching sensations.
6. Circadian Rhythm Effect
Due to the body’s natural biological clock, itching sensations may feel more intense at night when distractions reduce and body awareness increases.
7. Medication Side Effects
In some cases, certain diabetes medications may cause skin irritation or rashes as side effects.
Expert Advice
Dr. Mahajan emphasized that maintaining controlled blood sugar levels, proper skin care, hydration, and regular medical consultation are essential to prevent complications related to diabetes. Early attention to symptoms like persistent itching can help avoid serious skin or nerve-related problems.
She advised patients to follow a healthy diet, maintain hygiene, monitor glucose levels regularly, and seek medical guidance if itching persists.
