A significant meeting of MGNREGA workers was held at village Talwandi Khuman under the leadership of Kashmir Kaur, following a decision by the All India Agricultural Labour Union to safeguard the rights and interests of rural workers.
Addressing the gathering, District President Gurnam Singh Talwandi and General Council Member Jasbir Singh Jhabal called upon MGNREGA workers to unite under the organization’s banner and strengthen their struggle for labour rights and job security.
During the meeting, the union passed a resolution urging the village sarpanch to ensure employment opportunities for MGNREGA workers and to facilitate timely payment of wages directly into workers’ bank accounts for work completed under the MGNREGA scheme.
Union leaders also encouraged workers to expand membership in the village and form a strong local committee to collectively fight for their rights and welfare.
Speaking on policy issues, Jasbir Singh Jhabal criticized the central government, alleging that amendments to labour laws and changes in MGNREGA provisions reflect anti-worker policies. He further claimed that rising inflation, including an increase in LPG cylinder prices, has placed an additional financial burden on the working class while benefiting large corporate houses.
The leaders also appealed to workers to organize village-level meetings on April 14 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and raise awareness about protecting the Indian Constitution and workers’ rights.
