Lehragaga: A major and historic development has emerged from Lehragaga in the healthcare sector, as the Punjab Government has taken a significant step toward establishing a medical college and hospital in the region.
Under this initiative, the Community Health Centre (CHC) Lehragaga, which was previously in a dilapidated condition, has been completely transformed. OPD and IPD services have now been launched with the availability of specialist doctors, providing immediate medical relief to local residents.
The announcement was made by Cabinet Ministers Harpal Singh Cheema, Dr Balbir Singh, and Barinder Kumar Goyal during a press conference. Harpal Singh Cheema stated that these services will be delivered through Janhit Trust’s unit, Acharya Vidyanand Jain Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, which is expected to elevate Lehragaga’s prominence beyond Sangrur district.
Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh clarified that the institution is not being privatized. He emphasized that the government’s primary objective is to provide quality healthcare services to the public, and the trust will function with a humanitarian approach.
The government has also decided to revive the closed Baba Hira Singh Bhattal Institute of Engineering and Technology by converting it into a medical college and hospital. This facility will cater to nearby regions, including Moonak and Khanauri, benefiting a large population.
Earlier, the region suffered from a severe shortage of specialist doctors and emergency services, forcing residents to travel to Sangrur or Patiala even for minor treatments. This new development is expected to significantly improve healthcare accessibility and save lives.
Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal credited Harpal Singh Cheema and Dr Balbir Singh for their efforts in bringing the project to this stage. He further announced that from next year, nursing courses, along with MD and MS programs, will be introduced at the medical college.
The institution will offer 100 MBBS seats and include a hospital with at least 440 beds, strengthening Punjab’s position as a growing hub for medical education. Admission and fee structures will be regulated as per state government norms.
The event was attended by officials from Janhit Trust, local administration, and a large number of residents, marking a new chapter for Lehragaga as an emerging healthcare model in Punjab.
