Amritsar (Suraj Kamlesh): The Jaskaran Singh Selection Row has reached the highest levels of Indian sports administration after Amritsar MP and Punjab Volleyball Association president Gurjeet Singh Aujla met Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Dr P.T. Usha.
During the meeting, Aujla strongly raised the issue of Punjab’s emerging volleyball player Jaskaran Singh and sought the personal intervention of the IOA chief. Moreover, he expressed disappointment over Jaskaran Singh’s exclusion from the Indian senior volleyball team’s training camp.
Aujla Seeks Fair Review
In a written representation to Dr P.T. Usha, Gurjeet Singh Aujla highlighted Jaskaran Singh’s impressive performance at the Senior National Volleyball Championship 2026 held in Varanasi.
The player from Amritsar earned the prestigious Best Universal Player award during the tournament. However, selectors did not include him in the Indian senior team’s training camp. Consequently, the decision triggered disappointment among players, coaches, and volleyball enthusiasts.
Questions Raised Over Selection Process
Referring to the Jaskaran Singh Selection Row, Aujla questioned the transparency and fairness of the selection process.
He said that authorities should give priority to talent and performance in sports. Furthermore, he noted that excluding deserving players while selecting comparatively less accomplished athletes raises serious concerns about merit-based selection.
According to Aujla, every player deserves equal opportunities and fair treatment. Therefore, sports administrators must ensure that performance remains the primary criterion for national team selection.
Demand for Greater Punjab Representation
Besides highlighting Jaskaran Singh’s case, Aujla also raised another important issue. He pointed out that Punjab has produced several national and international volleyball players, coaches, and experts over the years.
Despite these contributions, Punjab still lacks adequate representation in national volleyball selection committees, coaching structures, and administrative bodies.
The Amritsar MP said Punjab has played a major role in the growth of Indian volleyball. However, he termed the state’s continued underrepresentation at decision-making levels as unfortunate and concerning.
Appeal to IOA President PT Usha
Aujla urged Dr P.T. Usha to ensure a fair review of the Jaskaran Singh Selection Row. In addition, he appealed to the IOA president to ensure that talent, performance, and excellence remain the sole basis for selection to the national team.
He also demanded meaningful representation for Punjab in national volleyball committees, selection boards, coaching structures, and administrative platforms.
Transparency and Equal Opportunities
Gurjeet Singh Aujla expressed confidence that timely intervention in the matter would strengthen the trust of players and the sporting community.
Furthermore, he said such action would reinforce the principles of transparency, fairness, and equal opportunities in Indian sports administration.
The Jaskaran Singh Selection Row has once again highlighted concerns regarding merit-based selection in Indian volleyball. Meanwhile, Aujla maintained that Punjab has always brought glory to the nation and will continue producing talented players who make India proud.
