Jalandhar: The Jalandhar Pollution Crisis has intensified after the Municipal Corporation received a massive ₹7 crore penalty for the poor performance of sewage treatment plants (STPs).
Moreover, Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) officials revealed the fine during a high-level meeting chaired by Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal.
As a result, concerns over untreated sewage and environmental pollution have sharply increased.
₹7 Crore Penalty Imposed on Jalandhar MC
PPCB officials imposed the fine due to the unsatisfactory functioning of three STPs in the city.
In addition, authorities reviewed measures to stop untreated sewage from flowing into Kala Sanghian Drain, Jamsher Drain, and Chitti Bein.
Therefore, officials also assessed the overall performance of sewage treatment infrastructure in Jalandhar.

Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal strongly criticized officials for their negligence.
Moreover, he said ordinary citizens ultimately suffer because of poor administration.
He also demanded accountability from the responsible authorities.

Serious Concerns Over Basti Peerdaad STP on Jalandhar Pollution Crisis
The issue became more serious after officials failed to provide proper sludge records from the 50 MLD treatment plant at Basti Peerdaad.
Moreover, Sant Seechewal questioned the transparency and monitoring system of the plant.
Therefore, concerns regarding environmental safety and operational efficiency increased further.
Untreated Sewage Still Flowing into Drains
Sant Seechewal revealed that the government had already spent ₹34 crore on lining the Kala Sanghian Drain.
However, untreated sewage and industrial waste still continue to flow into the drain.
As a result, pollution levels remain high despite heavy public spending.
Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia and Municipal Commissioner Sandeep Rishi assured improvements soon.
Dairy Waste and Smart City Delays Raise Questions
The MP also highlighted direct dumping of dairy waste from Jamsher Dairy Complex into the drain.
Moreover, he informed officials that a 2.5 MLD CBG plant is already operational and another one is under planning.
In addition, he raised concerns over delays in the Smart City road project along Kala Sanghian Drain.
Therefore, he demanded a strong implementation policy for pending projects.
Wariana Dump Cleanup Ordered
Officials also discussed the cleanup of the Wariana garbage dump.
Moreover, the drainage department assured that all accumulated sludge and debris would be cleared by June 15.
