Chandigarh: Convict in the assassination case of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, Jagtar Hawara parole petition, came up for hearing in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Hawara has filed a petition seeking parole to take care of his ailing elderly mother. The court heard the matter today and issued fresh directions.
Court Issues Fresh Notice to Jail Authorities
During the hearing, the court issued a fresh notice to the Director General (Prisons) of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.
However, since the jail authorities did not submit a response earlier, the court reissued the notice. Moreover, the next hearing has been scheduled for 6 July.
CBI Opposes Parole Plea
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) strongly opposed the Jagtar Hawara parole petition.
The agency argued that releasing Hawara on parole could pose a serious security risk. It also expressed concern that he may abscond or reconnect with the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International.
Furthermore, the CBI highlighted his past prison escape as a major reason for opposition.
Past Jailbreak Cited in Court
According to the CBI, Jagtar Hawara had previously escaped from Burail Jail in 2004. He and his associates reportedly dug a tunnel to flee from custody.
However, authorities re-arrested him nearly a year later. This incident continues to be a key point in legal arguments against granting him parole.
In addition, the agency stated that his criminal background raises serious concerns about public safety.
Allegations of Terror Links
The CBI also alleged that Hawara maintained links with terrorist organizations, including Babbar Khalsa International.
Therefore, it argued that granting parole could lead to potential security threats. The agency maintained that he should not be released under any circumstances.
Next Hearing Scheduled
The court has now listed the matter for further hearing on 6 July. Until then, jail authorities have been directed to submit their response.
Meanwhile, the Jagtar Hawara parole petition remains under judicial consideration.
Conclusion
The parole plea filed by Jagtar Hawara has sparked strong opposition from investigative agencies. While he seeks temporary release to care for his mother, authorities have raised serious security concerns.
Overall, the High Court will continue hearing the matter in the coming weeks.
