The Health and Wellness Department in Una has launched a special HPV vaccination campaign aimed at preventing cervical cancer among adolescent girls in the district. The vaccination drive will be conducted on March 29, April 5, and April 12 at 27 designated health institutions across the district.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Verma shared this information during a press conference held at the Regional Hospital in Una. He stated that approximately 4,500 girls aged between 14 and 15 years will receive the vaccine free of cost under the campaign.
According to Dr. Verma, around 1,000 girls have already been registered, while on-the-spot registration facilities will also be available for remaining beneficiaries. He explained that a single dose of the vaccine provides long-term immunity and protects against the virus responsible for causing cervical cancer.
He further clarified that the vaccine is completely safe and effective. It has been certified by the Drugs Controller General of India based on recommendations from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization and the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization. The HPV vaccine is already being administered in 159 countries, including Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
Block Medical Officer Basdehra Dr. Ram Pal Sharma and his wife Dr. Anupam Sharma also shared their experience, stating that they vaccinated their daughter, Kumari Pranvi Sharma, confirming its safety and effectiveness. Dr. Verma added that several senior doctors in the district have also vaccinated their daughters and expressed satisfaction with the results.
Appealing to residents, the Chief Medical Officer urged parents not to believe in misconceptions and to actively participate in the campaign for the better future of their daughters. He emphasized that the vaccine does not cause infertility or any long-term side effects but instead protects against reproductive health risks linked to HPV infection.
The press conference was attended by Medical Superintendent of Regional Hospital Una Dr. Sanjay Mankotia, District Immunization Officer Dr. Richa Kalia, pediatric specialist Dr. Vikas Chauhan, gynecologist Dr. Priyanka, District Programme Officer Dr. Ankit Chaudhary, and other officials.
