Health Expert Dr Archita Mahajan Highlights Causes and Prevention of Milia Skin Condition

Dr Archita Mahajan Explains Milia Skin Condition

Renowned nutrition dietitian, child care homeopathic pharmacist, trained yoga teacher, and Padma Bhushan National Award nominee Dr. Archita Mahajan has raised awareness about milia, a common yet harmless skin condition that frequently appears around the eyes.

Speaking about the issue, Dr. Mahajan explained that milia are small white or yellow bumps formed when keratin, a natural protein found in skin, hair, and nails, becomes trapped beneath the skin’s surface. Although the condition is not dangerous and often resolves naturally, proper skincare practices can help prevent its formation.

She clarified that milia are commonly seen under the eyes, on the cheeks, and on the forehead. Unlike acne, which develops due to inflammation or clogged pores, milia occur because of keratin buildup inside tiny cysts under the skin.

Understanding Milia

Milia are small, non-inflammatory bumps caused by trapped keratin deposits. They are not pimples and should not be squeezed or treated like acne.

Major Causes

Dr. Mahajan identified key factors responsible for milia formation:

  • Accumulation of dead skin cells beneath the skin surface
  • Excessive exposure to sunlight causing skin damage
  • Skin injuries, medications, or certain medical conditions leading to secondary milia

Prevention and Treatment Tips

According to Dr. Mahajan, maintaining a consistent skincare routine is essential. Regular cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting the skin from harmful UV rays can significantly reduce the risk.

She advised individuals experiencing persistent milia to consult a dermatologist, who may recommend retinoid-based creams or professional removal procedures for safe treatment.

Dr. Mahajan emphasized that early awareness, sun protection, and healthy skincare habits are the best ways to maintain clear and healthy skin.
