Health experts are raising concerns over the growing impact of excessive mobile phone usage on mental health. Dr. Archita Mahajan, a nutritionist, dietitian, child care specialist, homoeopathic pharmacist, and trained yoga teacher, has warned that continuous scrolling on mobile devices can negatively affect brain function which is called as Popcorn Brain Syndrome.
According to Dr. Mahajan, constant mobile usage overstimulates the brain, leading to an imbalance of hormones such as dopamine and cortisol. This condition, often results in reduced focus, mental fatigue, and increased irritability.
She explained that prolonged screen time can also disrupt sleep patterns due to blue light exposure, which suppresses melatonin—the hormone responsible for sleep. This leads to poor sleep quality and reduced brain energy.
Dr. Mahajan further noted that exposure to negative content on social media can increase stress levels. Elevated cortisol levels can worsen mood, trigger anxiety, and create a sense of restlessness.
Continuous scrolling and consumption of new information can also cause cognitive fatigue, making even simple tasks feel difficult and causes Popcorn Brain Syndrome. This condition, commonly known as digital fatigue or brain fog, reduces clarity of thought and decision-making ability.
Effects on the Brain due to Popcorn Brain Syndrome:
- Reduced focus and concentration, impacting memory
- Sleep disturbances due to blue light exposure
- Increased stress, anxiety, and irritability
- Mental fatigue and “brain fog” due to information overload
- Possible impact on the prefrontal cortex, affecting decision-making
What Experts Recommend:
- Practice digital detox by taking regular breaks from screens
- Avoid mobile use at least one hour before bedtime
- Keep bedrooms screen-free to improve sleep quality
- Practice mindfulness and deep breathing exercises
- Engage in alternative activities like sports, music, painting, or spending time with family
Dr. Mahajan emphasized the importance of balanced digital habits, stating that mindful use of technology is essential to maintain mental well-being and overall brain health.
