Sri Amritsar Sahib (Dawarka Nath Rana): A strong CITU protest Amritsar was held against the alleged anti-labour policies of the Punjab government. They staged the protest at Dhabai railway crossing under the leadership of CITU district president Comrade Charanjit Singh Majitha. Protesters also burnt an effigy of the government and raised slogans against state policies.
The demonstration saw participation from several labour leaders and workers who expressed anger over recent labour reforms and rising cost of living. The CITU protest Amritsar focused mainly on labour rights, inflation, and poor civic infrastructure in the city.
Labour Codes Under Fire During CITU Protest Amritsar
Addressing the gathering, state vice-president Comrade Sucha Singh Ajnala strongly criticized the central and state governments. He said the introduction of four new labour codes has weakened workers’ rights across the country.
According to him, the new system reduces job security and promotes contract-based employment. He added that the government is replacing regular recruitment with temporary jobs, which puts workers at risk.
He also alleged that the government is reducing benefits like DA, gratuity, and other government-supported schemes. This, he said, leaves workers dependent on private employers.
The CITU protest Amritsar highlighted growing concerns among labour unions about employment security and social protection.
Inflation and Rising LPG Prices Raise Concern
During the protest, leaders also raised the issue of rising inflation. Comrade Ajnala said that increasing prices of essential goods are affecting poor families the most.
He pointed out that LPG cylinder prices have become unaffordable for many households. According to him, this situation has made it difficult for poor people to manage daily expenses.
Speakers said the government has failed to control inflation, which is directly impacting workers and low-income families.
Civic Issues Also Highlighted in Amritsar
The CITU protest Amritsar was not limited to labour issues. Leaders also criticized the functioning of local authorities in the city.
They raised concerns over garbage accumulation, damaged tubewells, and contaminated drinking water supply in Amritsar. Comrade Ajnala said that such issues are making daily life difficult for residents.
He also targeted the Aam Aadmi Party-led municipal administration. He alleged that the mayor has failed to provide basic civic facilities to citizens.
Warning of Further Agitation
CITU warned that if authorities do not resolve the drinking water problem within five days, the organization will launch a stronger protest. Leaders said they would stage a demonstration outside the municipal corporation office if the situation remains unchanged.
The warning adds pressure on local authorities to address public grievances quickly.
Call for Demand Day Participation
At the end of the rally, leaders appealed to workers to participate in the upcoming “Demand Day” program scheduled for 12 May at 22 Number Fata.
They said the event will further strengthen the voice of workers against anti-labour policies and civic neglect.
Several leaders, including Advocate Kamaljit Kaur, Vijay Kumar, Raja Ram, Kirpa Ram, Dharampal, Suraj, and Gurdeep Singh Batala, also addressed the gathering and supported the CITU protest Amritsar.
