BJP MLA Randhir Sharma Targets Himachal Government Over Corruption, Entry Tax and Panchayat Poll Issues

Randhir Sharma Slams Himachal Govt Over Corruption

BJP media in-charge, party spokesperson and MLA Randhir Sharma launched a sharp attack on the Congress-led Himachal Pradesh government during a press conference, alleging widespread corruption and administrative irregularities in the state.

He claimed that the state government is deeply immersed in corruption while projecting an image of honesty that does not reflect the ground reality.

Chester Hill Land Case Raises Questions

Sharma said the Chester Hill land controversy in Solan has raised serious questions about the credibility of the administrative system. He alleged that it was unprecedented for an acting Chief Secretary to personally hold a press conference to defend allegations against himself.

“Where officials themselves come forward to give clarifications while the government remains silent, it indicates deeper issues,” he remarked, adding that the naming of several former and current senior officials during the press briefing has created public concern about possible protection of corruption at higher levels.

He further accused the government of shielding tainted officials and granting extensions to keep them in influential positions.

Allegations of ‘Commission Culture’

The BJP leader alleged that the Chief Minister’s Office has become a hub of a “commission culture,” claiming that contractor payments are allegedly being processed based on influence rather than procedure.

“Those with connections receive payments while others are forced to wait,” he said, describing the situation as alarming.

Government Cornered Over Entry Tax Issue

Targeting the government over the entry tax decision, Sharma alleged that the Chief Minister misled the Assembly, stating that the notification issued on the same day contradicted statements made in the House.

He criticized the imposition of ₹100 entry tax on five-seater vehicles, calling it a direct burden on the common public. According to him, confusion prevailed at border checkpoints on April 1, where different tax rates were reportedly collected, leading to anger among transporters and citizens.

He warned that the decision could increase inflation and negatively impact trade, taxi operators, transport businesses, and the tourism industry.

Allegations Regarding Panchayati Raj Elections

Sharma also accused the Congress government of attempting to delay Panchayati Raj elections and manipulate the process. He alleged that a backdated notification granted deputy commissioners authority to make up to 5% changes in the roster system, which he described as a violation of constitutional provisions under Article 243(D) and Panchayati Raj laws.

He claimed such changes could alter the entire electoral structure and create legal disputes that may delay elections.

Questions Raised on State Budget

Criticizing the state budget, Sharma said it lacks economic vision and developmental direction. He alleged that development expenditure has declined while state debt has crossed ₹1 lakh crore and revenue deficit continues to rise despite increased taxation.

“The slogan of a self-reliant Himachal exists only on paper, while the state is moving toward an economic crisis,” he added.

Demand for Judicial Probe and Protest Announcement

The BJP leader demanded an inquiry monitored by a single judge of the High Court into the Chester Hill case and other corruption allegations to ensure transparency.

He also announced statewide protests under the leadership of the BJP state president from April 8 to April 11 across all 68 Assembly constituencies. He said the party would intensify its struggle “from the streets to the Assembly” to expose what he termed corruption, authoritarianism, and anti-people decisions of the Congress government.
