Bhakra Dam Water Level Surges, More Water Release Likely

Bhakra Dam Water Level Surges, More Water Release Likely

Chandigarh: The Bhakra Dam Water Level has risen sharply after fresh rainfall and snowfall in the Himalayan region. Increased inflow into Gobind Sagar Lake has pushed the reservoir level higher. As a result, authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Officials have also indicated that they may release more water in the coming days as snowmelt accelerates in the upper catchment areas.

According to data recorded at 6:00 AM, the Bhakra Dam Water Level reached 1,573.56 feet. The rise comes at a time when electricity consumption and water demand are increasing across northern states. Therefore, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has activated all turbines at the dam.

Rising Demand for Water and Power

Punjab is currently witnessing peak demand for irrigation water because of the ongoing paddy transplantation season. Farmers depend heavily on canal networks for crop cultivation. To meet this growing demand, BBMB has increased water discharge while maintaining power generation.

The board is also supplying water to support irrigation and drinking water requirements in several states. Consequently, power generation at the Bhakra Dam has increased significantly.

Water Inflow and Discharge Figures

Official figures show that water inflow into Gobind Sagar Lake reached 17,256 cusecs. At the same time, total discharge through the turbines touched 29,106 cusecs.

BBMB is releasing 10,150 cusecs into the Sri Anandpur Sahib Hydel Channel. In addition, it is diverting 12,350 cusecs into the Nangal Hydel Channel.

Officials are also releasing 8,000 cusecs of water from the Nangal Dam into the Sutlej River. This controlled discharge helps authorities manage reservoir levels and meet irrigation requirements.

Alert Issued for Sutlej River Villages

The Bhakra Dam Water Level remains under close observation as weather activity continues in the hills. Experts expect snowmelt and rainfall to increase water inflow further. Therefore, authorities may release additional water to maintain safe reservoir levels.

Keeping this possibility in mind, BBMB and the civil administration have issued an alert for villages located along the Sutlej River. Officials have advised residents to avoid riverbanks and remain cautious about changing water levels.

Authorities have also urged people living in low-lying areas to follow official advisories. If inflows continue to rise, the administration may implement additional precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

Bhakra Dam Water Level to Remain in Focus

The Bhakra Dam Water Level will remain a key focus in the coming weeks. Rainfall, snowmelt, and irrigation demand will continue to influence reservoir operations. Officials have assured residents that they will closely monitor the situation and take timely steps to protect both water resources and public safety.
