Barnala: In a tragic incident, a farmer lost his life due to an electric shock from an 11,000-volt power line in Barnala.
The deceased has been identified as Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Vidhata village, who was harvesting wheat in his field using a combine harvester at the time of the accident.
Accident During Harvesting
According to initial reports, the incident occurred due to low-hanging high-voltage electricity wires passing through the field. While operating the combine harvester, the machine came in contact with the 11kV wires, leading to a massive electric current passing through it.
Jaswinder Singh died on the spot due to the severe electric shock.
Family’s Statement
Village representatives Surjit Singh and Avtar Singh stated that Jaswinder Singh was the sole breadwinner of his family. He was cultivating around six acres of land to support his household.
The impact of the current was so intense that it damaged the combine harvester and its tyres.
Allegations of Negligence
The family and villagers have alleged negligence on the part of the electricity department, stating that the wires were hanging dangerously low in the fields.
They have demanded financial compensation from the Punjab government and strict action against those responsible. They also urged authorities to raise the height of high-voltage lines in agricultural areas to prevent such incidents in the future.
Police Action
According to ASI Bhajan Lal from Tallewal Police Station, a case has been registered under Section 194 of the IPC based on the family’s statements, and an investigation is underway.
