A senior nutrition dietitian and child care expert from Shah Hospital, Kaithal, has issued an important health warning regarding the growing obsession with rapid weight loss and slim body trends. The expert, who holds a Master’s degree in Food Nutrition and Dietetics and is also a homeopathic pharmacist, life science specialist, botanist, health inspector, and trained yoga teacher, has been nominated for the Padma Bhushan National Award and honored by the Punjab Government, Himachal Pradesh Government, and the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Leh-Ladakh.
According to the senior dietitian, the craze for fitness and quick weight loss is increasing across all age groups. However, rapid weight loss methods may pose serious health risks instead of improving overall well-being, especially when nutrition is suddenly restarted after prolonged dieting or fasting.
How Does the Risk Develop?
The expert explained that dangerous conditions may arise due to:
- Crash dieting or extremely low-calorie diets
- Prolonged fasting or starvation-like eating patterns
- Sudden intake of high-protein diets or supplements
- Restarting heavy meals after long periods of restricted food intake
These situations can lead to a medical condition known as Refeeding Syndrome.
What is Refeeding Syndrome?
Refeeding syndrome occurs when the body remains in a low-energy state for an extended period due to inadequate calorie intake. When food is suddenly reintroduced:
- Insulin levels rise rapidly
- Essential minerals such as phosphate, potassium, and magnesium shift from blood into cells
- Severe electrolyte imbalance may occur
This condition can result in serious complications including heart arrest, extreme weakness, seizures, and even multi-organ failure.
In simple terms, crash dieting followed by sudden heavy nutrition significantly increases the risk of refeeding syndrome.
Who is at Higher Risk?
The dietitian identified several high-risk groups:
- Young girls and women aiming for rapid slimming
- Bodybuilders and extreme fitness followers
- Individuals eating very little for long periods
- People practicing excessive food restriction
Warning Signs to Watch For
Common symptoms include:
- Sudden fatigue or weakness
- Dizziness or fainting
- Irregular heartbeat
- Swelling or burning sensation
- Hair loss and poor skin health
In severe cases, electrolyte imbalance and hypophosphatemia may occur.
Safe Weight Loss Tips
The expert advised adopting safer methods:
- Lose weight gradually (0.5–1 kg per week)
- Restart eating slowly after fasting or restricted diets
- Follow a balanced diet combined with light exercise
- Regularly monitor electrolytes and vitamin levels
The dietitian emphasized that sustainable fitness should focus on long-term health rather than rapid physical transformation.
