CM Sukhu Targets Assam BJP Govt Over Adani Power Deal

CM Sukhu Slams Assam Govt Over Adani Power Agreement

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, during a press conference held at Rajiv Bhawan in Assam’s capital Guwahati, launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Assam government, accusing it of taking decisions that could harm the state’s resources and public interest.

Addressing the media, Sukhu alleged that the Assam government signed a 6000 MW power generation agreement with Adani Power, which he claimed was not beneficial for the people of Assam. He stated that the power purchase agreement was fixed at ₹6.30 per unit, while electricity generated through solar energy projects is available at significantly lower rates ranging between ₹2.50 and ₹3 per unit.

The Chief Minister expressed concerns over possible irregularities in the agreement and demanded a thorough investigation. Referring to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s statement, he said that if the Congress forms the government in Assam, all such agreements would be reviewed and strict action would be taken against those found guilty.

Sukhu further alleged that despite the BJP being in power in Assam for the past ten years, the state has not witnessed expected improvements in economic growth and employment opportunities. He accused the BJP of practicing politics based on caste and religion, adding that voters would not be misled this time.

Citing Himachal Pradesh as an example, Sukhu said the state’s per capita income has increased to ₹2.83 lakh, around ₹64,000 higher than the national average under the Congress government. He highlighted welfare initiatives such as free electricity up to 125 units, and 300 units free power for extremely poor families.

He also mentioned that despite the discontinuation of annual financial assistance worth ₹8,000–10,000 crore received earlier under RDG support, the state government is working toward financial self-reliance through fiscal discipline.

Highlighting achievements in social sectors, Sukhu said Himachal Pradesh has maintained a high literacy rate while improving education and healthcare services. Tourism development has also gained momentum, and orphaned children have been declared “Children of the State,” ensuring government responsibility for their welfare. Additionally, the Old Pension Scheme has been restored for government employees.

Speaking about agricultural reforms, he said the government has increased minimum support prices (MSP) for naturally grown crops, including wheat (₹60 to ₹80 per kg), maize (₹40 to ₹50 per kg), barley from Pangi Valley (₹60 to ₹80 per kg), and natural turmeric (₹90 to ₹150 per kg). Ginger has been included under MSP for the first time at ₹30 per kg. Milk procurement prices have also been fixed at ₹61 per litre for cow milk and ₹71 per litre for buffalo milk.

Assam Congress Committee Media Chairman Yadovrat Bora and party spokesperson Mahima Singh were also present during the press conference.
