On the occasion of Samta Diwas, leaders of the Himachal Pradesh Congress paid floral tributes to legendary freedom fighter and prominent Dalit rights leader Babu Jagjivan Ram at the state Congress headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, on his birth anniversary.
The tribute program witnessed the special presence of Rajya Sabha MP and National Coordinator of the All India Congress Scheduled Caste Department, Karmveer Bauddh, who also serves as Himachal Pradesh in-charge.
Remembering Babu Jagjivan Ram’s legacy, Karmveer Bauddh said that the veteran leader served the nation as a Union Minister for nearly three decades and played a crucial role as Defence Minister during the 1971 war. He also highlighted Jagjivan Ram’s significant contribution to the Green Revolution and his lifelong efforts toward the upliftment and empowerment of Dalit communities. Bauddh added that his role in shaping constitutional values and social justice remains historically important.
Himachal Pradesh Congress Vice President Amit Nanda described Babu Jagjivan Ram as not only a distinguished politician but also a great social reformer. He noted that Jagjivan Ram played a key role in the formation of the All India Depressed Classes League in 1935 and actively fought against untouchability while promoting social unity. As Agriculture Minister, he contributed significantly to making India self-reliant in food production and strengthening the success of the Green Revolution.
Congress General Secretary Yashpal Tanaik and State Mahila Congress President Zainab Chandel also paid tributes, recalling his contributions to public welfare and social equality.
Several party leaders and workers, including Congress General Secretary Chandrashekhar Sharma, Shimla Urban District President Inder Jeet Singh, Scheduled Caste Department Working President Jeevan Kumar, District President Bhupendra Kaushal, along with many office bearers and party workers, attended the program. A large number of Congress members, including Shubhra Zinta, Yogesh Thakur Yogi, Tushar Stan, Atul Thakur, Prakash Kanyal, and Rohit Kashyap, were also present.
The event highlighted Babu Jagjivan Ram’s enduring legacy as a champion of equality, social justice, and inclusive development.
