Heritage Street, a major attraction for devotees visiting Sri Darbar Sahib and tourists from across India and abroad, has come under scrutiny over concerns related to food quality and safety.
Apart from essential items, several food outlets operating along the popular street sell ice cream, kulfi, and cold beverages. However, allegations have surfaced that the quality of these food products is not being adequately monitored by the Food Safety Department.
Businessman and social worker Vipul Neuria Marwari, along with Sanjay Kejriwal, General Secretary of the Bada Shri Panchayati Mandir Shri Raghunath Ji Trust, has urged authorities to take immediate notice of the issue. According to Neuria, the arrival of summer has significantly increased the consumption of ice creams and cold drinks, yet regular inspections of shops remain absent.
He stated that nearly a dozen shops operate in the area, but their products are rarely checked for quality standards. The last major inspection reportedly took place around two years ago, when the Health Department had even formed a monitoring team. Since then, however, enforcement has weakened.
Sanjay Kejriwal alleged that while strict action is usually taken against illegal activities during festive seasons such as Diwali, routine monitoring during normal days appears lacking. He warned that negligence in food safety could pose serious health risks to devotees and tourists visiting the holy city.
Both representatives have demanded increased inspections and stricter monitoring by the Food Safety Department to ensure public health and maintain the reputation of the city’s prominent tourist destination.
