Himachal and Norway Explore Partnership on Sustainability

Shimla (Kameshwar Sharma): Himachal and Norway Explore Partnership opportunities in sustainable development, environmental conservation, and green innovation as Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, in Shimla.

The Chief Minister said that Himachal Pradesh and Norway share a common vision for balancing environmental protection with economic growth. He added that stronger cooperation could create innovative solutions for mountain regions around the world.

Discussions Focus on Green Development

During the meeting, both sides held detailed discussions on several important sectors. These included construction and demolition waste management, solid waste management, circular economy practices, resource recovery, sustainable tourism, and the development of waste-free tourist destinations.

Additionally, they discussed climate-friendly urban development, renewable energy, green transition initiatives, digital governance, and smart city projects.

Himachal Seeks Norwegian Expertise

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that Himachal Pradesh aims to benefit from Norway’s expertise, advanced technologies, and best practices in construction and demolition waste recycling.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the state government remains committed to promoting sustainable and environment-friendly urban development. He added that significant opportunities exist for collaboration between Himachal Pradesh and Norway in this sector.

Investment Opportunities for Norwegian Companies

The Chief Minister invited Norwegian companies to invest in Himachal Pradesh. In particular, he highlighted opportunities in tourism, green energy, and geothermal energy projects.

Moreover, he said the state government wants to work closely with Norwegian institutions, experts, and technology partners. Together, they can develop practical and innovative models that may also be replicated in other mountainous regions.

Focus on Environment and Green Cover

Sukhu said the state government is actively promoting electric vehicles to strengthen environmental protection efforts.

In addition, Himachal Pradesh has set a target to increase its green cover from 29.5 percent to 32 percent. The government is encouraging active participation from youth and different sections of society to achieve this goal.

Natural Farming and Rural Economy

The Chief Minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to promote chemical-free natural farming.

Furthermore, he said the state is providing minimum support prices for maize, wheat, milk, and raw turmeric. These initiatives aim to strengthen the rural economy and support a robust agricultural system.

Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh, Mayor Surender Chauhan, Chief Secretary K.K. Pant, Principal Secretary Devesh Kumar, Director of Urban Development Neeraj Chaddha, and other dignitaries also attended the meeting.
