New Delhi: The IMD Heatwave Alert has raised concerns across North India as temperatures continue rising rapidly in several states.
Delhi and many northern regions are already experiencing extreme heat conditions. During afternoon hours, roads and markets appear deserted because people are avoiding exposure to the scorching sun.
The temperature in the national capital has already crossed 45 degrees Celsius in several areas.
IMD Warns of Peak Heatwave Conditions
According to the latest India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin, the heatwave will intensify further in the coming days.
The IMD Heatwave Alert predicts severe heatwave conditions in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, and the Konkan-Goa region until May 22.
Therefore, officials have advised people to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
Temperatures Expected to Rise Further
Weather experts believe temperatures may rise significantly across western Himalayan regions in the coming days.
Meanwhile, maximum temperatures in northwestern plains will continue increasing steadily. As a result, people may face unbearable heat and humidity conditions.
The weather department also warned that hot and dry winds could make daytime conditions even harsher across several states.
Delhi Likely to Witness More Extreme Heat
Residents of Delhi may not receive immediate relief from the ongoing heatwave.
The IMD forecast says Delhi’s maximum temperature may rise by another 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next three days.
On Sunday, the city may witness partly cloudy skies along with light thunderstorms during afternoon or evening hours. However, strong hot winds with speeds between 20 and 30 kilometers per hour are likely to continue.
In some areas, wind speeds may even touch 40 kilometers per hour.
Delhi Temperature Could Reach Dangerous Levels
Although Sunday’s maximum temperature may remain around 44 degrees Celsius, weather experts expect temperatures to rise further next week.
With clearer skies expected, Delhi’s temperature could touch the dangerous 45-degree Celsius mark again.
The IMD Heatwave Alert has prompted health experts to advise people to drink more water, wear light clothing, and avoid direct sunlight during daytime hours.
