Health experts have raised serious concerns over the growing impact of air pollution on newborn babies. Dr Archita Mahajan, a nutritionist, dietitian, child care specialist, homoeopathic pharmacist, and trained yoga teacher, has warned that increasing air pollution is posing a significant threat to infants’ health.
According to Dr. Mahajan, newborn babies are particularly vulnerable because their lungs are not fully developed. Harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide present in polluted air can severely damage their respiratory system, making breathing difficult and, in severe cases, life-threatening.
She highlighted that prolonged exposure to polluted air can lead to chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis in children. These conditions can affect a child’s health and development for a lifetime.
Citing studies, she noted that air pollution contributed to approximately 1.6 lakh newborn deaths globally in 2019, and the number continues to rise. Pollution also affects fetal development during pregnancy, increasing risks such as premature birth, low birth weight, and weakened immunity.
Dr. Mahajan further explained that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can impact brain development, leading to reduced cognitive abilities. Long-term exposure may also increase the risk of conditions such as autism and ADHD.
Major Effects on Newborns:
- Severe respiratory issues like pneumonia and asthma
- Premature birth and low birth weight
- Impaired mental and physical development
- Increased risk of autism and attention disorders
- Weakened immunity
- Potential long-term risks including heart disease
Preventive Measures:
- Use air purifiers to maintain clean indoor air
- Avoid taking infants outdoors during high pollution levels
- Ensure proper nutrition for mothers to strengthen infant immunity
Dr. Mahajan emphasized that ensuring clean air is essential for protecting newborns and urged families to take preventive steps to safeguard their children’s health.
