Amritsar Farm Workers Demand Action on Land, Wages

Amritsar: A delegation of farm workers led by Gurnam Singh Talwandi, District President of the All India Agricultural Workers Union, met the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar to raise key issues affecting rural laborers.

The delegation, under the leadership of state secretary Jasbir Singh Jhabal, highlighted concerns regarding alleged illegal encroachment on land designated for waste disposal in village Ram Tirath Kaler. They demanded immediate action by the SDM Lopoke to remove the encroachment reportedly carried out by a former village sarpanch.

The workers also raised the issue of delayed payments under the MGNREGA scheme. They urged authorities to ensure that pending wages are credited to workers’ bank accounts and called for proper implementation of the employment guarantee law in rural areas.

Additionally, the delegation requested directions to Block Development Offices to restore work under MGNREGA and ensure timely payment to laborers who have already completed assigned work.

The Deputy Commissioner assured the delegation that their genuine demands would be addressed and appropriate action would be taken.

Several union leaders and local representatives, including Lakhwinder Singh Kaler, Darshan Singh Kaler, Nishan Singh Kaler, and others, were present during the meeting.
