Chandigarh: In a significant development, the Amritpal Singh has suffered a major setback as the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed his petition challenging the National Security Act (NSA) imposed on him.
Amritpal Singh had filed a petition against the NSA detention orders, but the court rejected his plea. He has been lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail since April 2023.
The initial detention order against him was issued on March 18, 2023. In his petition, he challenged the third detention order issued on April 17, 2025, which was approved by the Punjab Government on April 25, 2025, and later confirmed on June 24, 2025.
Meanwhile, the High Court is also scheduled to hear a separate petition filed by the Punjab Government seeking to continue his detention in Assam. The state government has argued that Amritpal Singh’s activities had earlier impacted law and order in Punjab, and shifting him back to the state could pose security challenges.
The government has further stated that keeping him in Assam ensures a secure environment for ongoing legal proceedings and investigation.
Notably, the NSA imposed on Amritpal Singh is set to expire later this month. While the High Court has dismissed his petition, the legal battle continues as the state government pursues its own plea.
