New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the ambitious Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at strengthening urban mobility and public transport in Rajasthan’s capital city.
The approved project includes a 41-kilometre North–South metro corridor stretching from Prahladpura to Todi Mod, featuring 36 stations and an estimated investment of ₹13,037.66 crore. The project will be executed by Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited (RMRCL), a joint venture equally owned by the Government of India and the Government of Rajasthan.
Enhanced Connectivity Across Jaipur
The Phase-2 corridor will connect several important commercial, residential, and institutional hubs, including Sitapura Industrial Area, VKI Area (VKIA), Jaipur International Airport, Tonk Road, SMS Hospital and Stadium, Ambabari, and Vidhyadhar Nagar. Underground stations are planned near the airport zone to ensure efficient passenger movement.
The new corridor will integrate seamlessly with the existing Phase-1 metro network through interchange stations and feeder transport systems, creating a unified metro network across Jaipur.
Expected Rise in Ridership
Currently, Jaipur Metro Phase-1 operates along the East–West corridor from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar, covering 11.64 km with 11 stations and serving nearly 60,000 passengers daily. Officials expect ridership to increase significantly once Phase-2 becomes operational, encouraging greater use of public transport and reducing reliance on private vehicles.
Strong Economic and Policy Backing
The project has undergone extensive evaluation, including inter-ministerial consultations, Network Planning Group review, and Public Investment Board assessment. It has achieved an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) exceeding the 14% benchmark, demonstrating strong socio-economic viability.
Funding will be arranged through equity contributions from both central and state governments, subordinate debt, and multilateral financing mechanisms, in line with the Metro Rail Policy 2017.
Sustainable Urban Development Push
Jaipur Metro Phase-2 aligns with Rajasthan’s Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Policy-2025, proposed Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) reforms, and national sustainable transport goals. Scheduled for completion by September 2031, the project aims to reduce traffic congestion, lower vehicle emissions, and improve mobility for residents, workers, and tourists.
Once completed, the North–South corridor will complement the existing East–West line, providing citywide metro connectivity and reinforcing Jaipur’s transformation into a modern, future-ready urban center under the vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Rajasthan.
